The Path We Choose Featuring Dr. Kanwal Kaisser

You Can Have a Career Without Losing Your Priorities | Dr. Kanwal Kaisseri | Ep. 40

Hey everyone, Umer here!

We often talk about whether women should work, whether they should focus on their families, how much a career should matter, and what a “balanced” Muslim life looks like.

But I think we sometimes start with the wrong question.

The better question is:

What has Allah actually made me responsible for, and how do I fulfill those responsibilities without allowing one part of my life to consume everything else?

That was one of the central themes of my conversation with Dr. Kanwal, a pediatrician, educator, Qur’an student, and someone who has spent years navigating the intersection of career, family, personal growth, and Islam.

And the conversation went much deeper than simply asking whether women should have careers.

Here’s what I learned.

Your Career Is Not Your Identity

Dr. Kanwal explained that her journey never began with a plan to become a public figure. She wanted to learn the Qur’an, practice it, and help others who were also trying to understand it. Her career and dawah developed along the way. 0930

The lesson is simple: your work can be meaningful without becoming your identity. Your intention and your relationship with Allah have to remain at the center.

There Is No One Formula For Every Woman

The conversation challenged the idea that every woman must either build a career or stay at home. Some women have the ability and circumstances to work, while others may find fulfillment in being homemakers.

The important question is whether you are developing yourself, fulfilling your responsibilities, and making decisions based on your circumstances rather than society’s expectations.

Don’t Let Your Career Consume You

Ambition is not necessarily the problem. Obsession is.

Your career should not become your entire life while your family, worship, and relationship with Allah become secondary. The goal is not to do less, but to understand what deserves priority at each stage of your life.

Growth Does Not Always Mean A Career

Dr. Kanwal also spoke about women who feel that if they cannot work outside the home, there is nothing meaningful left for them to do.

But growth can look very different. You can read, study the Qur’an, exercise, learn about parenting, volunteer, or develop a new skill. Even a small amount of time can become valuable when you use it intentionally.

Marriage Needs Clarity

For working couples, many problems can be prevented through clear conversations about responsibilities, finances, family, and expectations.

Saying yes to something before marriage does not always mean you understand what living with that decision will look like years later. Couples need to keep communicating and adjusting together.

Men Have To Keep Growing Too

The responsibility for a healthy marriage cannot fall entirely on women.

Dr. Kanwal pointed out that women are often encouraged to learn about parenting, stress management, and the Qur’an, while men sometimes assume they already know everything. A healthy family requires both spouses to remain willing to learn and improve. 0930

Your Children Are Watching

Children learn from what they see at home.

If a father speaks disrespectfully to his wife, his son may learn that behavior. If parents communicate respectfully and support each other, children learn that too. Parenting is not only about what you teach your children. It is also about what you demonstrate in front of them.

Start With The Qur’an

The conversation ultimately came back to the Qur’an. Dr. Kanwal explained how her life changed when she moved from simply reading the Qur’an to actually understanding its meaning.

The goal is not to use the Qur’an to correct everyone around you. It is to ask Allah what He is asking you to change and then take ownership of applying it.

If this resonated with you, the full episode goes deeper into Allah’s allocation, hard work, comparison, tawakkul, finding the right path, authentic religious knowledge, differences of opinion, basic Islamic education, and what it really means to live your faith wherever Allah has placed you.

Thanks for tuning in. I hope this episode encourages you to live authentically and embrace your own path with resilience.

Best,

Umer Farooque
